What Really Happens During a Boudoir Session? (And Why You’ll Be Obsessed With the Results)
Thinking about a boudoir session but low-key terrified? Totally normal. Whether you're here because you Googled "what actually happens in a boudoir shoot" at 1 a.m., or because a friend showed you her album and now you're curious (and also mildly panicked), this guide is for you.
Let’s demystify the process so you know exactly what to expect—and why our clients walk away saying, “I wish I’d done this sooner.”
What Is a Boudoir Session?
It’s a photo shoot, sure. But it’s also a full-on confidence experience. You get glammed up, wear outfits that make you feel like that version of yourself, and pose like the cover of a magazine—except instead of being styled for someone else, you’re styled entirely for you.
It’s not about being sexy for someone else (though that’s a great bonus). It’s about feeling powerful in your own skin.
It’s a chance to step outside of the roles you live in every day—mom, partner, employee, caretaker—and step into a space that’s just for you. No judgment. No rules. No weird lighting.
This session isn’t about fixing anything. It’s about remembering something: that you are allowed to take up space, to be bold, to take the damn photo.
You don’t have to have six-pack abs or a reason. You just have to show up—and we’ll take care of the rest.
What Happens During a Boudoir Shoot?
You walk in. We say hi and hand you something bubbly, caffeinated or just a fresh glass of hydrating H20. You sit back while our professional hair and makeup artist gets to work. Think red carpet, but with a cozy robe and zero pressure.
We’ll chat about your outfits, go over what you're excited or nervous about, and then head into the studio where the real magic begins.
I will guide you into every pose—you don’t need to know what to do with your hands. Or your face. Or your legs. ( I got you.)
Do I Have to Be Naked?
Absolutely not. Some clients wear lace. Some wear sweaters. Some wear dresses. Some wear modest lingerie, and others wear barely anything. In fact during our standard boudoir session we do not do full nudes. Do offer full nude? Yes we do, but that is a different type of session that involves another layer of consent and getting to know one another before the session. It’s 100% your call, and we support whatever makes you feel your most stunning self—whether that’s in a bodysuit or birthday suit.
How Do I Prepare?
Don’t worry, we send a prep guide that covers everything from what to eat the night before to when to wash your hair. We cover skincare, what to pack, and even the little stuff (like don’t wear tight socks that leave lines).
You show up, and we take it from there.
I’m Super Awkward. Will You Help Me Pose?
Oh, friend. That’s literally our job. We’ll tell you where to look, how to move, what to do with your hands, and how to arch just enough without feeling like a yoga class broke out.
And bonus: We do it all without ever saying things like “be sexy.” (Cringe.)
Can I Bring My Own Lingerie?
Absolutely—and not just a couple pieces. We recommend bringing a full range of your favorites: lingerie, bodysuits, cozy sweaters, cutoff denim, blazers, leather jackets, sheer robes, or anything that makes you feel like you. We've had clients roll in with two suitcases and a duffel bag, and we love that energy.
While we typically shoot 3–4 looks, it's best to bring more than you think you'll need so we can curate the best combos once we see everything in person. Think of it like packing for a very glamorous, slightly spicy weekend away with yourself.
And if you want to raid the studio wardrobe? Go for it, we have that as an add on, and you go home with something new. We’ll help you mix and match, style everything, and make sure each look feels true to you and fits the vibe you're going for. Check out this blog post on find lingerie
What If I Don’t Love My Body?
This is the big one. And here’s the truth: most of our clients say this walking in. They also say they’re too old, too soft, too tall, too short, too something.
But you’re not here to shrink yourself. You’re here to see yourself fully. We use posing, light, wardrobe, and experience to capture you as you are—and remind you how stunning that is. be sure to check out my blog on Ms A who is the perfect role model.
How Private Are My Photos?
Completely. 100%. Pinky promise. Your images are yours and yours alone unless you give us permission to share them. If you want to keep them just for you (or someone lucky), they stay private.
How Long Does a Boudoir Session Take?
Plan on 3–4 hours. Hair and makeup takes about 60–90 minutes, then we shoot for 90 -120 minutes depending on your wardrobe, comfort level, and snack needs. (We have snacks. Always.)
What do I get afterwards?
About 10–14 days after your session, you’ll return to the studio for your image reveal and ordering appointment. This is where you’ll see your fully edited images for the first time, select your favorites, and decide how you want to display them—whether that’s in a luxury album, wall art for your bedroom, or a collection of digitals just for you.
The session itself lasts about 90 minutes, and while we’ll capture a variety of poses and looks, the viewing is where it all comes together. We’ll walk you through your options, answer all your questions, and help you create something truly personal.
And yes—some clients cry. (In a good way.)
Is it weird to do this just for me?
Not even a little. In fact, some of our favorite sessions have been just-for-me shoots. Zero regrets, 100% badass energy.
There doesn’t need to be a birthday, anniversary, or partner in the picture to justify doing something wildly affirming for yourself. A "just because" session is often the most meaningful—because it's rooted in self-worth, not obligation.
It’s for the woman who's tired of waiting for a reason. It’s for the one who wants to reconnect with herself after a hard season. It’s for the one who looked in the mirror and decided today was enough.
Doing it just for you isn’t indulgent. It’s revolutionary. And honestly? It shows. The confidence, the freedom, the joy—it’s magnetic.
So yes, book the session. You don’t need permission. But if you’re looking for a sign? This is it.
I would love to see you at our Seattle Boudoir Photo Studio for this empowering boudoir session meant to elevate your love of self.
