Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Boudoir Photography (But Were Afraid to Google)

Thinking about booking a boudoir session, but your brain is running through a list of questions faster than you can pour a glass of wine? Don’t worry—you’re not alone. As a Seattle boudoir photographer, I’ve heard every question you can imagine (and a few I never saw coming). That’s why I’ve put together this master FAQ guide. Whether you’re curious about what to wear, how much privacy you’ll have, or if you really need to know how to pose (spoiler: you don’t), I’ve got you covered.

What is boudoir photography?

Boudoir photography is an intimate style of portraiture that celebrates confidence, sensuality, and self-expression. At my Seattle boudoir studio, I help clients look and feel their absolute best through guided posing, professional styling, and a safe, empowering environment.

Do I have to know how to pose?

Nope! In fact, most of my clients have never been in front of a professional camera before, and I prefer it that way. I’ll guide you through every pose, from how to sit to what to do with your hands. Think of me as your hype woman with a camera—I’ll make sure you look amazing and feel comfortable the whole time. After the session everyone usually tells me how easy it actually was. While I make it easy and comfortable, I still expect you to prepare with your daily stretches. I am not talking hot yoga, just light stretches.

What should I wear to a boudoir session?

Anything that makes you feel confident. Lingerie is naturally popular, but not required. Bodysuits, your partner’s shirt, a cozy sweater, or even a sleek dress all photograph beautifully. I recommend bringing a mix—something soft and romantic, something bold and sultry, and something that feels authentically you. Before your session, you are going to get so much guidance for preparation.

Do you provide hair and makeup?

Yes! Every boudoir session includes professional hair and makeup styling. This isn’t about transforming you into someone else—it’s about highlighting your natural beauty so you feel polished, photo-ready, and confident.

Where does the photoshoot take place?

Sessions take place at my Seattle boudoir studio, which is designed with multiple sets and lighting options. Whether you’re going for soft and dreamy, bold and dramatic, or playful and flirty, we’ll create the vibe that fits you best.

How long does a boudoir session last?

Most sessions last around 90 minutes. That gives us plenty of time for multiple outfits, different sets, and a relaxed pace so you can ease into the experience without feeling rushed.

Do you retouch the photos?

Yes—but with a light touch. I edit every final image to remove distractions like blemishes or bruises, but I don’t alter body shapes. You’ll still look like yourself, just with the benefit of great lighting, posing, and professional editing.

Can I keep my photos private?

Absolutely. Your photos are 100% private unless you give me written permission to share them. Most clients keep their images personal, while a few love to share their favorites—either way, the choice is yours.

Is boudoir photography only for certain body types?

Definitely not. Boudoir is for every body—every size, every shape, every age. I work with women, couples, and clients of all backgrounds. My job is to bring out your confidence and capture your unique beauty.

What if I feel nervous?

That’s completely normal. Almost every client walks in with nerves and leaves feeling empowered. Once we get started, most people are surprised at how much fun they’re having. And by the end, the nervous energy turns into excitement when you see just how incredible you look.

Do you offer couples boudoir photography?

Yes! Couples boudoir is one of my favorite sessions because it captures the connection and chemistry between partners. Whether you want romantic, playful, or steamy photos, we’ll create a mix that feels true to your relationship.

Is boudoir a good wedding gift?

Absolutely. Bridal boudoir albums are one of the most popular gifts for grooms and brides alike. They’re timeless, intimate, and way more personal than cufflinks or a watch.

Do you offer albums and wall art?

Yes. While digital images are included in many collections, most clients also order albums or wall art. There’s something timeless about seeing your images in print—rich colors, tangible pages, and a keepsake you’ll never lose in a hard drive crash. I still have images from my great grandparents in 1907. Ironically, photos of my oldest sons birth are such a low resolution I cannot even print them, will he have them in 30 years? He will have that printed birth announcement.

What if I lose my digital files?

I recommend backing them up in two places or three places. I can go over best practices with image storage so you can insure that your images are stored and protected.

Do I have to wear lingerie?

Not at all. Wear whatever makes you feel confident. I’ve photographed women in everything from cocktail dresses to oversized sweaters to nothing at all. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and authentic.

Can I bring props?

Yes! Props can make your photos even more personal. Popular choices include your partner’s shirt, a favorite book, champagne, or even a guitar. If it tells part of your story, bring it.

What’s your studio vibe?

My Seattle boudoir studio is a mix of cozy corners, glamorous sets, and bold backdrops. It’s versatile enough to create everything from romantic bridal boudoir to edgy couples sessions.

Final Thoughts

Boudoir photography isn’t just about the photos—it’s about the experience. It’s about stepping into your confidence, celebrating your body, and maybe even surprising yourself with how bold and empowered you can feel. Whether you’re considering a solo session, a couples boudoir shoot, or bridal boudoir as a wedding gift, the most important thing to know is this: you don’t have to be “ready,” a certain size, or a natural in front of the camera. You just have to show up. I’ll take care of the rest.
